Enterprise cloud computing company Salesforce.com announced Thursday at its Dreamforce conference in San Francisco that information technology departments have developed and deployed 135,000 custom applications on the Force.com platform, a figure the company said illustrates the rapid rise of cloud-based business software.
According to Salesforce.com, more than 15,000 companies signed up Force.com Free Edition, a free version of their service that allows enterprises to deploy one custom app for one website for use by up to 100 users, since its deployment in June.
"The tremendous momentum we are seeing with the Force.com platform is validation that it is the fastest and easiest path to building apps in the cloud," said Marc Benioff, chairman and chief executive of Salesforce.com.
Company representatives cited a report by IT research firm IDC and commissioned by Salesforce.com that found that companies were able to develop custom applications four to five times faster and at half the cost on Salesforce.com than they were with on-site .NET development.
Salesforce.com is an enterprise cloud computing company based in San Francisco and founded in 1999. The company provides multitenant customer relationship management services, as well as Force.com, a technology platform that allows enterprises to build and run business applications.
