EDL Solutions:

Cisco and EMC form cloud computing alliance

Updated: 2009-11-04

Computer networking company Cisco Systems and data storage firm EMC will collaborate to develop new computers, networking gear and storage equipment for use with cloud computing.

Their new product line of prefabricated business computer systems, called vBlock Infrastructure Packages, will include servers from Cisco, data storage hardware and software from EMC and server management software from developer VMWare. This could allow the companies to quickly expand into the business server market.

"Wherever you touch any one of the three of us, we will look like one company," Cisco chief executive John Chambers told the Boston Globe.

The new systems will allow businesses to form their own "private clouds" similar to centrally-controlled cloud computing services that offer software over the internet, but that are limited to a single corporate sever. This will enable companies to install and upgrade software or control information from a single control center.

EMC and Cisco may be trying to take advantage of the rapidly expanding market cloud-based services, which analysts expect to grow faster than other technology sectors in the coming months. A recent survey by technology consulting and software development firm Avanade found that global use of cloud-based services grew 320 percent in the past three quarters.
